Our Story
Kamurai Kavhu:
GURUVE, Zimbabwe — Kamurai Kavhu, one of a handful of female sculptors from the Shona people's Korekore tribe, has carved a path from humble beginnings in Guruve to international acclaim. Born on February 21, 1971, into the Nzou Samanyanga totem, Kavhu's journey in art began after financial constraints halted her formal education.
As a student at Horseshoe Primary School, Kavhu demonstrated a talent for traditional dancing, sewing, and athletics. However, her academic pursuits were cut short in 1986 due to her family's financial situation. She remained at home until marrying Jealous Chatsama in 1988.
In 1992, Kavhu's artistic destiny was set in motion when she joined the Tengenenge Art Community. Her entry into the sculpting world was inspired by fellow artist Alice Musara, whom she met while selling her handmade clothing. Kavhu honed her skills with guidance from her neighbor, Gift Chengu, quickly transitioning from initial creations of an eagle and a baboon to a repertoire of human, animal, and bird figures.
Kavhu's talent has since garnered numerous accolades and global recognition.
-
2005: She received a Sculptor Award Certificate from the National Art Gallery and the African Millennium Foundation.
-
2010: Her work was showcased internationally with an exhibition and workshops at the African Spirits Gallery in Appiano, Italy.
-
2013: She participated in a cultural exhibition in Mvurwi.
-
2015: Kavhu exhibited at the National Art Gallery Harare, where she received a certificate and an award of excellence.
-
2016: She attended a course organized by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on Community-Based Tourism, focusing on tourism, accounting, and marketing.
-
January 2022: She won a prize in the Hand-up Stone Art Project, sponsored by Pathfinder Ubuntu.
In recent years, Kavhu's work has evolved towards a more realistic interpretation of the human and animal form. This approach allows her to explore the boundary between reality and fantasy. While realism demands disciplined form interpretation, fantasy provides her the freedom to express her work less sentimentally. The woman and child make up the central theme of a majority of her pieces.
Her sculptures have been exhibited worldwide in countries including Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, the United States, Korea, and China. With a desire to share her experiences, Kavhu actively seeks opportunities to attend workshops and exhibitions globally.
A married mother of four, Kavhu's life and art stand as a testament to her perseverance and creative spirit, overcoming adversity to achieve international recognition.

Career Overview
Betias Chakawa's career in sculpture began in 1997, immediately following his completion of Ordinary Level studies. Hailing from an artistic family, Chakawa easily embraced the craft, following in the footsteps of his father and older brothers. The work of his brother, Rearson Chakawa, served as a specific source of inspiration. Chakawa's body of work frequently explores themes of family and lovers.
Tengenenge Art Community
Chakawa is a full-time resident artist at the Tengenenge Art Community. His work is exhibited at Tengenenge, and his sculptures have been sold to collectors in numerous countries worldwide. The artist's long-term aspiration is to participate in international workshops and exhibitions.
Chanesta Tichaona
In the world of Zimbabwean sculpture, Tichaona Chanetsa has carved a unique path, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Knowledge Chanetsa. Born on November 24, 1986, Tichaona received his primary and secondary education at Nyamhondoro School. In 2003, he formally embarked on his sculpting journey, initially serving as his brother's assistant for several months before establishing himself as a sculptor in his own right later that same year.
Despite facing challenges in selling his sculptures, Chanetsa found employment at Rawstone Mining within the Tengenenge Art Community. His artistic focus centers on themes of lovers, and he favors working with black serpentine stone, which he finds conducive to creating his sculptures. His work has garnered international recognition, with exhibitions held in various countries worldwide. Off the chisel, Chanetsa is married to Cecilia Mbonge, daughter of December Mbonge, and they share one child.
NAME: SEMETE DOREKA
he world of Zimbabwean stone sculpture has seen countless artists emerge from the vibrant cultural landscape, and Semete Doreka is no exception. Born on February 15, 1968, and a member of the Korekore tribe with the Iland totem, Doreka's artistic journey began early. He first learned to sculpt while still in school, honing his skills before graduating from his O-levels in 1986, at which point he became a full-time sculptor working from his home.
Doreka's career took a significant turn in 1990 when he was influenced by his uncle, renowned artist Henry Munyaradzi, to join the Tengenenge Art Community. This move placed him at the heart of one of Zimbabwe's most famous artistic hubs. From there, his work gained international recognition, with his sculptures being exhibited across the globe. His pieces have graced galleries in Germany, Holland, Italy, Belgium, Australia, the United Kingdom, China, Korea, and the United States, as well as several other African countries.
Today, the married artist continues to contribute to the rich legacy of Zimbabwean sculpture, with a body of work that has been seen by audiences worldwide.
Robert Murengwa:
From humble beginnings as a bus conductor to becoming a celebrated sculptor and sales manager, Robert Murengwa's journey is one of perseverance and artistic passion. Born on December 25, 1973, near Guruve, Zimbabwe, Murengwa hails from the Korekore tribe and carries the Tembo Mazvimbakupa (Zebra) totem.
After completing his education at Chakaodza Primary School and St Phillips Magwenya High School, Murengwa entered the working world, not with a chisel, but with a bus pass. He began his career at the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) as a bus conductor, eventually rising through the ranks to ticket inspector and then traffic superintendent by 1994. His time in public transport was cut short in June 1996 when he was laid off, forcing him to return to his rural home.
The path to sculpting was not direct. Following his return, Murengwa took a position as an electrician's assistant at Guruve Hospital before being transferred to Harare in 1997. However, his true calling had been brewing since his school days, when he first began carving stone. He was drawn to the craft by his love for hunting, which inspired his initial creation: a baboon he had observed in the bush.
In 2000, Murengwa's journey led him to the renowned Tengenenge Art Community, where he became an assistant to master sculptor Bernard Matemera. By this point, he was already a skilled artist. It was at Tengenenge that he created a human figure titled Stepping Forward, a piece that symbolized his decision to fully commit to stone sculpting for life and never look back.
His work is characterized by a range of subjects, including elephants, goats, and women in various styles. Murengwa's sculptures have been exhibited at prominent venues, including the Ramambo Art Gallery and the National Gallery in Harare.
In a testament to his versatility, Murengwa's career at Tengenenge extended beyond his artistic creations. He was hired as a security guard at the Tengenenge Art Gallery in 2005 and, by the end of 2006, was promoted to the sales management team. Today, Murengwa is a married father of three, a respected figure in the art community, and a living example of a life dedicated to artistic pursuit.
Edson Seda
Born on October 5, 1977, in Muzarabani, Edson Seda's life has been defined by his journey from his family's move from Mozambique to Zimbabwe to his rise as an internationally recognized sculptor. A member of the Chikunda tribe and of the Hangaiwa (Pigeon) totem, Seda comes from a family of six, including two boys and four girls.
After completing his O-level education in 1991, Seda launched his career as an artist in 1992. He was significantly influenced and mentored by two pivotal figures in Zimbabwean art: his brother, the master sculptor Bernard Matemera, and Tom Blomfield, the founder of the renowned Tengenenge Art Centre. This early guidance helped shape Seda's distinctive style, which would later gain international attention.
Emblematic of Seda's style is the Leaf Head, a series of stone sculpture portraits of the human head tapering off into a leaf. He makes them in different sizes and with different stone types. He seeks to create awareness of nature and how we are all connected with fauna and flora around us.
His skill and dedication earned him a place among the top artists at the Tengenenge Art Centre, where he was ranked in the top 10 for sales in 2002. In 2005, his talent was further recognized when he won a prize at an exhibition sponsored by the Korean Embassy.
In 2012, Seda's work took him to the Netherlands, where he participated in workshops with local artists and communities, broadening his artistic horizons. His sculptures are known for their evocative and distinct motifs, which include works titled Happy Leaf, Moving Duck, Family Elephant, Blooming Flower, and Duck in Pond. These pieces highlight his fascination with nature and family, common themes in his creative output.
Through his compelling work and growing reputation, Edson Seda has cemented his place in the world of stone sculpture, contributing to the rich artistic tradition of Zimbabwe.
Prosper Chiroodza, born on May 25, 1980, has established himself as a talented stone sculptor within the renowned Tengenenge Art Community. His sculpting journey commenced in 2002 at Tengenenge, where he was inspired by fellow sculptor Bornwell Chiwaridzo.
Chiroodza dedicated eight months to assisting Chiwaridzo before emerging as a skilled artist in his own right. He finds his artistic inspiration in themes of families and dancers, and he is particularly adept at crafting large-scale sculptures.
His work has garnered international attention, leading to exhibitions of his sculptures across the globe. Chiroodza views the Tengenenge Art Community as Zimbabwe's premier art gallery, underscoring the importance of his work within such a prominent artistic environment.
Chirodza's ability to weave intricate veineous nestlike forms into stone with a hollow interior is mind bending and his propensity to create form defying narratives into stone is unparalled.

Comas Chifamba: Renowned sculptor Cosmas Chifamba, a member of the Rozvi tribe with the Shumba Mhazi (lion) totem, was born on July 10, 1976, in Mudindo, Chifamba Village. His artistic journey began early, creating wire and mud toys during his childhood, before being inspired by his brother Ephraim to take up stone sculpting in 1990.
Chifamba's initial foray into stone carving at age 14, a human head, was a natural extension of his mud-modeling hobby. His first sculpture was sold to John Deere, a sale that sparked his passion for the craft. This initial success was followed by commissions for female figures from American buyer Anthony Ponder, which provided Chifamba with substantial income while he was still a student. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident when he purchased a stereo radio, much to the surprise of his classmates, and he became the first student at his school to be visited by a foreign collector.
After completing school in 1995, Chifamba paused his sculpting career for a period of corporate employment.
-
1995–1996: Worked at Kadoma Cotton Company in Kadoma.
-
1996–1997: Was employed by the Post and Tele-Communication Company.
-
1997–1998: Worked as a messenger for Mangwana and Partners in Chinhoyi.
-
1998–2002: Served as a stock controller for Tedco Management and Service Company.
In 2002, Chifamba returned to sculpting part-time, before becoming a full-time artist in 2004. He initially worked as a resident artist at the local Sangabayu Art Gallery before joining the Tengenenge Art Community in mid-2004.
His love for curves and feminine sensuality is captured in practically every sculpture by Chifamba. While at Tengenenge, he refined his skills under the mentorship of established artists like Chris Chirongo, Charles Chisute, and Chris Kasinahama. After proving his commercial viability, he was given his own permanent display space. His talent was formally recognized by gallery director Steve Blomefield after Chifamba won an award at a show.
Polished or not, Chifamba’s pieces have a finished quality. According to him, his sculpting is primarily focused on "painful feelings" and "horrific feelings" to help him understand and express "depressing feelings." He believes his works are a thematic exploration of human emotion, yet, his product in the end is often expressed in flowing joyful sensualness.
Outside of his artistic pursuits, Cosmas Chifamba is married to Loveness and is a father of two children.
SANDA CHABVUTA
Born in a family of eleven in Guruve, Mashonaland Central, Sanda Chabvuta's journey into the art world was forged through necessity and a chance encounter. The ninth-born son of Mr. and Mrs. Chabvuta, he was raised in Chabvuta village, under Chief Chipuriro, and attended Kondo Primary and Secondary School. Following his completion of the ZJC level in 1989, a lack of funds pushed him toward the blasting industry.
A career-defining moment occurred in 1990 after his marriage when Chabvuta met Tengenenge art community artist Tarisanayi Musarara. Musarara, a stone sculptor, encouraged him to visit the renowned community to try his hand at the craft. Chabvuta, seeking new employment, took the advice seriously and soon found himself immersed in the world of stone sculpting.
Inspired by his mentor, Chabvuta quickly developed his own distinctive style, beginning with a carving of a mermaid. His work has since garnered international attention, with his sculptures finding homes in Germany, the Netherlands, America, and the UK.
Today, Chabvuta is a father of four, with aspirations to attend overseas workshops and hold a solo exhibition. He stands as a testament to the transformative power of art and community, having turned a difficult financial situation into a flourishing international career. His current thematic representations of crocodiles and alligators has earned him the moniker: Crocodile Man.

Douglas Shawu: A muscular, diminutive and prominent sculptor from the Korekore tribe of the Shona people, with the Nzou Samanyanga (Elephant) totem, was born on October 9, 1987, at Tengenenge Farm. His early life was marked by adversity, including the passing of his father in 1992 and the subsequent halt to his schooling due to financial hardship. His size belies the nature of his pieces which are often animal themed pieces hewn from rocks that weigh anywhere from one to three tons. His workshop is the first structure directly opposite the Tengenenge Gallery building. When he is not sculpting larger than life pieces, he is mining huge stones for use by him and other artists to bring their ideas to life.
At the age of 16, Shawu began working as a farm clerk at TYCO in 1994. To supplement his income, he engaged in poultry farming and traded fish and clothing from Harare. Despite these responsibilities, sculpting became a part of his life, with raw stones sourced from the nearby Tiaseka Farm during his free time.
According to him, his initial inspiration stemmed from witnessing a fellow TYCO employee and sculptor, Clever Gangarahwe, return from European workshops and exhibitions with a motor vehicle, a symbol of the financial rewards sculpting could offer.
In 1996, Shawu established himself as a permanent fixture at the Tengenenge Art Community. He credits his family's artistic background, including his father and brother Felix, and his own long-held aspiration to be a sculptor, as key factors in his ease of learning the craft. Under the guidance of the late Bakari Manzi at Tengenenge, Shawu developed his technique in handling tools and achieving sharp finishes on stone.
Shawu's career at Tengenenge experienced a brief period of disruption due to disagreements with the then-director, Chairos Muchembere. However, he soon returned to the gallery. His talent was further recognized in 2005 when an American client sponsored him to attend workshops in Harare. In the same year, he earned a prize in an AGIO competition in Chitungwiza, sponsored by CHAW, and continued his winning streak with another prize at a Tengenenge exhibition. He further secured another win at Tengenenge in 2006. An entrepreneurial and industrious fellow, Shawu built a shop in 2023 to sell drinks and other minor provisions in Tengenenge.

Cloudious Muhomba: Softspoken, tall, gangly man with piercing eyes and internationally renowned sculptor Cloudious Muhomba, a member of the Korekore tribe with the Nzou Samanyanga (elephant) totem, was born on August 10, 1970, in Guruve. His family's farming background eventually led to his artistic career within the
Tengenenge Art Community.
Muhomba's formative years were spent in Mutare, where he began his schooling in 1978 while living with his uncle. A few years later, he reunited with his family at the Tengenenge Farm in Guruve, where he was exposed to the world of stone sculpting.
In 1985, at the age of 15, Muhomba created his first piece, a representation of a monkey, after years of observing the artists at the Tengenenge Art Community. After completing his Ordinary Level studies in 1991, he transitioned to the Tengenenge Art Gallery to pursue sculpting professionally.
He initially focused on creating monkeys before developing his unique style, which centered on octopuses and hands. Muhomba viewed hands as a vital motif, symbolizing the ability of every individual to perform their work well. He often incorporated this theme into functional art pieces like candle stands and trays.
Today, Muhomba is known for his signature lizard sculptures, which serve as both indoor and outdoor pieces. These are frequently designed with functional elements, such as bowls and water baths. His work has gained international recognition through exhibitions in numerous countries, including the Netherlands, Australia, Cyprus, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.
Muhomba stresses the importance of dedication and creativity to fellow artists. "I am working for my family and my country as well," he stated. "I am building my name and my nation abroad, that is why I am always advising artists to work hard and be creative. They must be wary and more devoted to their work; they must mull over their work first before money or cash."
A dedicated family man who internalizes his struggles, Muhomba is married to Nelia Dickson, also from Guruve. The couple has three children: Hilsa, Vanessa, and McCloud, who is visually challenged and lives with the artist in the family home in Tengenenge.

Josiah Manzi
JOSIAH`S PARENTS MOVED FROM MALAWI TO ZIMBABWE IN 1918. HIS FATHER WAS
A BUILDER AT TENGENENGE, A LARGE TOBACCO FARM IN THOSE YEARS. HE MADE
AXTRA MONEY FOR THE FAMILY CARVING MASKS. TAUGHT BY HIS FATHER, JOSIAH
ALSO BECAME A MASK CARVER. HE MADE HIS START WITH SCULPTING STONE IN
1967. DURING THE MORNING HE WOULD WORK ON THE FARM AND IN THE
AFTERNOON HE WOULD SCULPT
WHEN TENGENENGE CLOSED IN 1979 BECAUSE OF THE WAR, THE MANZI FAMALY IS
THE ONLY ONE WHICH STAYED AT TENGENENGE. DURING THIS TIME PERIOD IN
ZIMBABWE, THERE WAS A BUDDING ART MOVEMENT IN THE MAKING. IT WAS
RELATIVELY SLOW TO DEVELOP BUT WAS GIVEN MASSIVE IMPETUS IN 1966 BY THE
OWNER OF THE TENGENENGE, TOM BLOMFIELD, A WHITE IRISH – BORN FARMER.
THE FARM HEAD EXTENSIVE DEPOSITS OF SERPENTINE STONE SUITABLE FOR
CARVING A SCULPTOR IN STONE HIMSELF, HE WANTED DIVERSIFY THE USE OF HIS
LAND AND WELCOMED JOSIAH AND NEW ARTS. THIS WAS IN PART BECAUSE AT
THAT TIME THERE WERE INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS AGAINST RHODESIA`S WHITE
GOVERNMENT LED BY IAN SMITH, WHO HAD DECLEARED UNILATERAL
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IN 1965, AND TOBACCO WAS NO LONGER ABLE
TO GENERATE SUFFICIENT INCOME. APPROPRIATELY TENGENENGE MEANS “ THE
BEGINNING OF THE BEGINNING”– IN THIS CASE OF SIGNIFICANT NEW ENTERPRISE
THAT HAS LASTED THROUGH TO THE PRESENT DAY.
JOSIAH`S WORK IS SPIRITUAL, MAYBE BECAUSE OF HIS YAO CULTURE. IN SOME OF
HIS SCULPTURE, THE ANATOMY DEVELOPS NEW AND OFTEN DISTURBING
RELATIONSHIPS. TO JOSIAH IT SEEMS NATURAL FOR BREASTS DEVELOP FROM
THIGHS, YET TO THE ON LOOKER IT SEEMS SURREAL AND A SUBVERSION
ORTHODOXY. “HIS MONKEY AND OWL AND HIS MIRROR” SEEN LIKE GIANT
CAMEOS–THE SMOOTH, CARVED FIGURES OF THE ANIMALS, THE BIRD AND THE
HUMAN FACE CAREFULLY INLAID INTO THE STONE AN OFFSET BY THEIR NATURAL
SETTING. HE NOTES, “ BEFORE I START A SCULPTURE I TAKE OFF THE BLANKET OF
STONE, LIKE TAKING OF THE SKIN OF AN ANIMAL. NOBODY EATS AN ANIMAL
BEFORE THE SKIN IS TAKEN OFF”.
